Racing Together team dominates at home track with three podium finishes
Racing Together, Australia’s first Indigenous motorsport team, celebrated a major milestone at their home track over the weekend, turning heads with a string of podium finishes and standout performances across the board during the third round of the Toyota 86 Scholarship Series.
The team continues to create pathways into motorsport for First Nations youth, and this weekend’s success proved the model is working.
One of the key stories of the weekend was the impressive performance of Locky McHardy, Racing Together’s head mechanic and crew chief, who stepped into unfamiliar territory with confidence and determination.
“Heading into the weekend, I’d never worked on a Toyota 86,” McHardy said.
“Then straight after qualifying on the first day, I was thrown into a gearbox change with no warning, just straight in. Luckily, I got to work on it with the professional crew from Norwell.”
“Forty minutes later, the broken gearbox was out, a new one was in, and the car was running again.”
The intense learning curve didn’t slow him down.
“From not ever touching a Toyota 86 to doing general pre-race maintenance, a full gearbox and rear subframe, and work on the front end. I learned so much,” he said.
McHardy also credited the team at Norwell Motorplex for their support and mentoring during the high-pressure weekend.
“I couldn’t thank the Norwell team enough for the opportunity to work beside them and learn what I did. I’d do it all over again.”
While McHardy worked behind the scenes, Racing Together driver Kade Davey delivered results on track.
“The entire team put in a huge effort, and it really showed,” said Davey.
“We had all the cars dialled in and heading in the right direction. It was awesome to come away with three podiums and share those results with such a hardworking crew.
“A strong points haul for the championship too, which gives both myself and the team a big boost of confidence heading into Round 4 at Morgan Park.”
In total, the team walked away with second-place finishes in all three races which is a remarkable achievement for the young squad.
The atmosphere in the garage was filled with pride and excitement for the team’s achievements.
“This weekend at our home track, Queensland Raceway, was amazing,” McHardy added.
“It’s always rewarding seeing the hard work pay off and the smiles after the car crosses the finish line.”
Reflecting on the journey so far, McHardy said, “Most of all, I can’t ever thank Racing Together enough for everything they have done for me.
“From traveling to new locations to the dream of getting into a drift car, it means everything to me.”
Racing Together’s not-for-profit model gives Indigenous youth hands-on motorsport training, mentoring, and career opportunities.
With growing support from industry leaders and consistent race results, the team is showing what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
Racing Together will be back on track for their second round at Morgan Park Raceway on June 6 – 8.
